KUCHING: Some 200 villagers as a result of two longhouses in the interior of the Batang Ai are enjoying 24-hour power supply from solar panels as a result of Sarawak Energy's (SEB) quest for sustainable performance generation.
Households at Rh Kino and Rh Manggat are now well suited for a Solar Home System (SHS) set, comprising eight ceiling lighting fixtures and four switch socket outlets to be able to power basic electrical appliances.
Rh Kino and Rh Manggat might not be connected to the grid due to their remoteness. Capable to only be accessed by longboat for the Batang Ai reservoir – forty five minutes to Rh Manggat and one hours 30 minutes to Rh Kino.
"This initiative complements the government's idylic electrification programme to provide electricity in most rural households by 2020. Any SHS provides a viable interim determination until a more permanent solution tend to be implemented.
"It shows how loyal we are in making sure every room has a continuous supply of electricity, " SEB general manager for r & d Dr Chen Shiun said in a very press statement yesterday.

Although the installed solar volume doesn't cater for appliances requiring better quality power like refrigerators and washers, having a constant supply is already doing a difference.
Tuai Rumah Manggat Meringai said villagers can now switch on these lights and use electrical home equipment anytime of the day. Prior to this, each and every one family had a generator set which is why they spend about RM80 every thirty days on diesel while those with a petroleum generator set spend more than RM100 per month.
"When we use power generators, lights are switched on from 36. 30pm to 10pm only. Within festive occasions like Gawai Dayak and weddings, the generator match will run until midnight possibly the early hours of the morning. Now we also provide homestay to tourists simply a continuous supply helps a lot, " explained the 58-year-old farmer.
From Rh Kino, William Indap, forty six, said the longhouse used to have every 15 kilowatt diesel generator causing from 7pm to 10pm, few of times a week on Monday, Wed, Friday and Saturday.
"Now over the solar system, the children can watch television every day and there is no need to use torch light-weight in the early morning or late at nite. It has made life convenient normally! " said the father of handful of who is also a member of the vlg security and development committee.
